Neighbors helping neighbors since 1958
NARCU began with forty teachers, a shoebox, and a simple idea: pool a little money so everyone can borrow when they need it.
Our story
In 1958, a group of Raleigh schoolteachers each put $5 into a shared fund and agreed to lend to one another at fair rates. That fund grew into NARCU. Today we serve members across three states, and your $5 share still works the same way.
We're a not-for-profit cooperative. There are no outside shareholders to pay, so what we earn goes back to members as better rates, lower fees, and community investment. Our board is made up of members who volunteer their time.
What we value
- Plain language. If a fee or term needs a paragraph to explain, we change it.
- Local decisions. The people who approve your loan know your community.
- Financial wellbeing. Free coaching is available at any branch, with no sales pitch attached.
- Giving back. Every year, staff volunteer thousands of hours with local schools and food banks.
NARCU stands for Not A Real Credit Union. This page, like the rest of the site, is fictional and exists for demonstrations, browser-agent testing, and proof-of-concept builds.
